Lately I've been thinking a little about what I would like my country to be like. What are the things that I want for myself and my fellow South Africans? Here are some of the things that I thought about in no particular order:
- Most households should own the dwelling they are living in
- Proper nourishment
- Quality basic education (till grade 12)
- Anyone with the ability should be able to complete higher education
- For everyone to have the opportunity to use their skills to earn a living
- No racism
- Valuing cultural heritage and diversity
- Literacy in at least 3 languages (English + 2 local languages)
- Healthy state off all 11 official languages
- Leaders of Mandela's caliber
- Diversified and stable economy
- Conservation of nature and our natural resources
- Quality medical care
- Effective enforcement of our constitution and the law
- A narrowing gap between rich and poor
- Correlation between reward and value
There are existing visions like the Freedom charter which also states what South Africa should be like. Although it was done during the apartheid years, most of the charter still holds in my opinion.
Maybe a way to approach the problem in a different way is to ask what are the things we will fight for?
