Ideal South Africa

A while back I read "The Age of Napoleon". In one of the first few chapters (never got through the book) there is a discussion about what is means to be 'at liberty'.

Lately I've been thinking a little about what I would like my country to be like. What are the things that I want for myself and my fellow South Africans? Here are some of the things that I thought about in no particular order:

1. Most households should own the dwelling they are living in
2. Proper nourishment
3. Quality basic education (till grade 12)
4. Anyone with the ability should be able to complete higher education
5. For everyone to have the opportunity to use their skills to earn a living
6. No racism
7. Valuing cultural heritage and diversity
8. Literacy in at least 3 languages (English + 2 local languages)
9. Healthy state off all 11 official languages
10. Leaders of Mandela's caliber
11. Diversified and stable economy
12. Conservation of nature and our natural resources
13. Quality medical care
14. Effective enforcement of our constitution and the law
15. A narrowing gap between rich and poor
16. Correlation between reward and value

Surely there are many things that I've missed, but by trying to envision what I want South Africa to be like I can start thinking about how to get there.

There are existing visions like the Freedom charter  which also states what South Africa should be like. Although it was done during the apartheid years, most of the charter still holds in my opinion.


Maybe a way to approach the problem in a different way is to ask what are the things we will fight for?

In fact, talking are almost free these days.

The intention of this blog is to ask, discuss and be enlightened. Some people are quick to say things, negative things that other people accept for the status quo. Why do people believe it? Maybe it's simply that they don't know who else to ask and listen to.

I wish to be clear about something. I'm not here to complain about things, I do not wish to blame anyone for anything and I do not want to offend anyone. I want to get constructive discussion going that can eventually be put into action.

I have many questions I wish to ask, but lets get things started with this simple question (especially since the world cup is still going here in South Africa)

What is the state of soccer in our schools? Do we have school leagues, regional leagues, provincial leagues?
